Liz Phair catches up with Kyle Meredith to talk about the 30th anniversary of Exile in Guyville.
The indie legend speaks about touring the ’90s touchstone album with an immersive live story that spotlights the LP’s ties with The Rolling Stones’ classic album Exile on Main St. In particular, she digs into how she wanted to give voice and character to the women in the Stones’ original album.
Phair also discusses the overwhelming mythology created around her early days, fighting criticism to keep control of her artistic vision, and the piles of unreleased material from that era. She then discusses how she shifted the narrative of her next memoir to focus on that specific time in her life. “I don’t think I enjoyed that period of my life as much as I could’ve or, retroactively should’ve,” she elaborates. “I did not know that i was gonna become a national talking point.”
Elsewhere, she reveals the progress she’s made on a new record.
